Working While Collecting Social Security Disability

Can You Work While on Social Security Disability in Oregon?

It is possible to work and receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The benefits are numerous and include:

  • Cash benefits for a certain amount of time
  • Medicare or Medicaid coverage
  • New career opportunities through education, training and rehabilitation

At Helzer Cromar & Schneider, we are dedicated to helping our clients not only secure the benefits they need, but also helping them continue to contribute to a workplace.

If you have questions on working while collecting SSD or SSI benefits, contact an attorney at our firm by calling us at 503-608-7851 or toll free at 866-930-2812.

Many of our clients take advantage of the Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) program. They get answers to their questions about work incentives and how a job affects their benefits from a community-based organization. That vital information helps them make decisions related to reentering the workforce.

A trial work period gives the disabled a "tryout" for nine months out of a 60-month period to see if they can work. Benefits are still received as long as work activity is reported and the disability is still an issue. After that trial, you can start a 36-month extended period of eligibility where you can work and receive benefits as long as earnings are not substantial, usually under $1,000.

If your earnings do become substantial, you have five years in which you can restart your benefits immediately if you cannot continue working. New claims do not have to be filed and no waiting period exists. However, if hours are reduced to accommodate your medical or mental impairments and result in less than $1,000 in earnings per month, you can return to the program.
